Do volunteers need horse experience?

No, there are many ways for you to volunteer at the ranch. If you desire to work around the horses, you will be trained for the appropriate positions.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

Volunteers at Mending Strides Ranch must be at least 14 years old.

What do I wear?

You must wear closed toe shoes, such as, boots or tennis shoes. All clothing must be respectful and non-provocative. No offensive logos or sayings. Shorts must come down to the bottom of your fingertips. No bare midriffs or low cut shirts. No dangling jewelry. Depending on the type of work you are doing, you may need long pants to protect yourself in the long grass or brush. Hats, sunscreen and bug repellent are recommended. Do I have to volunteer on a certain day or come every week?

You may choose to volunteer just once on a special project, weekly or monthly. A volunteer coordinator will schedule your time. Volunteers responsible for feeding will work on specific dates that are flexible with your schedule.

Do I still come if it is raining/snowing?

Many of the activities will still be carried out if it is raining or snowing. No volunteers will work outside if there is thunder and lightning in the area. Contact your volunteer coordinator to verify if you should show up for your shift.

What kind of jobs do volunteers do with the horses?

Volunteers are never present during therapy sessions. They may work on other areas of the farm where sessions are not taking place. Most of the horse work involves cleaning the stalls/corrals/pastures, grooming, bathing, feeding and exercising the mini or donkey. Only experienced horseman will assist directly with the mustangs.
